Earn points by getting cats to curl up on your quilt in a unique boardgame with lots of heart and strategy.
In Calico, 1-4 players compete to stich the coziest quilt, attract sleepy cats, and score points through strategic tile placement. Calico may look sweet and unassuming, but don’t let it fool you. This is a mentally stimulating game that requires plenty of multitasking and attention to detail.
Game Components

When I opened up the box, I was delighted to find that all the game pieces are thick, of good quality, and are as vibrant as the online photos. Calico contains four quilt boards to layer colorful tiles, tokens, and pins onto. It also comes with a fabric pull-string bag to keep all your quilting tiles together. The cat theme permeates the entire experience, from the adorable cat-shaped tokens to the section in the back of the gamebook dedicated to the creators’ cats’ pictures and biographies.
Calico Gameplay Overview
There are technically only three things you need to keep in mind as you plan your Calico strategy: pins, cat tokens, and design goal tiles. The thing is, each element takes a lot of brain power to fully capitalize on. So, you’ll definitely want to put your thinking cap on for this game!
Stringing together same-colored tiles lets you to attach cute pins to your quilt for extra points. Additionally, placing patterned tiles together attracts cats to lay down on your quilt for even more points.

Specific rules for getting cats to show up on your quilt are generated each game. In the photo above, we see the number 3+ nestled between the stripe and fern pattern tiles. This means that 3+ stripe or fern pattern tiles would need to touch on your quilt in order for you to earn a Millie cat token (Millie is the leftmost cat in this picture). The number circled in blue shows how many points each cat earns you.
Most importantly, you should also aim to accrue as many design goals as possible. Each game, there will be multiple design goals available to you. You can find a thorough explanation on how to read design goal tiles on page 6 of the complete Calico rulebook.
Beauty and Brains

The balance between strategy and noncombative gameplay allows Calico to engage your mind without feeling overwhelming once you get over the initial hurdle of learning all the rules. While some people will pick it up quickly, it can take others (such as myself) a couple playthroughs to get the hang of Calico, since there are various avenues for scoring points that you will need to remember and balance. But after everyone learns the rules, gameplay becomes super snappy and satisfying. Draft tiles, choose a smart place to lay them down, score points, and boom! You’re done in under an hour. Perfect for squeezing in a game after dinner or between other activities.
My advice for new players is not to stress too hard trying to gain lots of points during your first one or two games. Instead, just view these as trial runs for getting to know the rules. This is typically my advice for any first time playthrough, but I especially want to stress it for Calico since winning the game highly depends on setting yourself up for success early on.
Real estate is valuable in Calico and every tile placement counts. Once you get to the middle or end of the game, you won’t have nearly as many choices for where to place your tiles. At this point, if you haven’t already been strategizing and setting yourself up for success, you’ll be left scrambling to find opportunities to earn points. Again, if you find yourself in this position, don’t stress! Each round of Calico should run only about 30-40 minutes, so (like I said before) just view it as practice for the next game.
High Replayability for 1-4 players
The combination of variable goals and tiles ensures no two rounds are ever the same, meaning Calico offers a satisfying puzzle to solve each game. Every quilt you create is unique and feels like a little work of art!
Solo-Mode: Play Calico on your own by competing against your personal best score.
Two-Player Mode: Calico is an excellent two-player game and will run smoothly as long as you remove some tiles from the bag (indicated in the rulebook).
3-4 Players: This is my favorite way to play Calico, as it offers just the right balance of independent, puzzle-solving play and light competition.
Final Thoughts / TLDR
Calico is excellent brain candy for anyone that enjoys spatial puzzles and light competition. The aesthetics are on-point, with lovely artwork and design touches that all tie together into a cohesive theme, so by the end your board looks like a cozy quilt dotted with sleepy cats. This is the kind of game that draws you in with its looks, then keeps you hooked with clever, mentally engaging gameplay.
It can take a playthrough or two to get used to juggling all the scoring possibilities, but once it all clicks, the game settles into a relaxing flow. Just remember: pins, cats, design goals. Those are the three things you have to focus on.
Still wondering whether you should get Calico?
If you’re still wondering whether you should get Calico, ask yourself: do you like calm, contemplative games that are relaxing but make you really think about every move? If yes, this game is absolutely worth a try. As a huge plus, its absolutely beautiful to look at, the components are solid, and the cozy cats on quilts theme gives Calico this extra special warm and fuzzy charm.
