Wingspan Overview: Getting to Know the Game
Wingspan is a beautifully designed engine-builder that’s easy to learn but full of depth. The sheer number of bird cards and level of strategy makes each playthrough feel fresh and engaging.
Discover 180 different kinds of birds to attract to your nature reserve in Wingspan. This light‑to‑medium difficulty engine builder has you collecting bird cards, placing them in different habitats, and using them to generate resources. It’s deeper than casual tabletop games like Settlers of Catan like but still pretty entry‑level compared to heavier engine-builders like Terraforming Mars. If you’re looking for a tabletop game that provides a satisfying amount of depth and tactical planning opportunities without being too complex or overwhelming, Wingspan is the one for you.
Playing Wingspan
Wingspan keeps things simple by including only three kinds of resources: food, eggs, and bird cards. Food lets you play bird cards, eggs help you pay additional costs and score points, and bird cards allow you to gain extra points and resources. There are a couple other ways you can earn points such as round objectives, but overall there aren’t too many moving pieces to juggle in this game. After four rounds consisting of 8,7, 6, and 5 turns respectively, points are tallied and the player with the most wins.
Although the gameplay is relatively simple and easy to digest, Wingspan is surprisingly creative in its mechanics and concept. The combination of habitats, unique bird powers, and limited resources allows players to experiment with different engine-building strategies each game. Every bird you play, every habitat you develop, and every decision about food, eggs, and cards offers opportunities to execute clever plans and gain the upper hand.

Visual Design & Components
The bird cards are beautifully illustrated, each showcasing a different species in vibrant detail and color. In addition to the bird cards and player mats, Wingspan also comes with little egg miniatures and resource tokens to help you keep track of what items you’re holding. There’s also a set of dice that determines which resources you acquire, and a dice tower shaped like a birdhouse! This tower can be quickly assembled and makes it easier to get a fair roll on each turn.
Final Thoughts
Its unique concept, beautiful design, and cohesive but low-key engine building mechanics make Wingspan stand out as a staple of any cozy tabletop game collection. Because of the depth of strategy and huge variety of bird cards, Wingspan is a highly replayable game, staying fresh and exciting even after numerous playthroughs.
