What Are RPGs?

RPG is short role-playing game, which refers to games where players take on the roles of characters in a fictional world. These games often emphasize detailed world building, storytelling, and character progression. Characters typically grow stronger over time by gaining experience points, leveling up, and acquiring new skills or equipment.

RPG Core Mechanics

Below are some of the most common gameplay mechanics in RPGs.

  • Character Growth: Gain experience points, level up, and unlock new abilities.
  • Quests: Complete main quests and side quests to advance the story or gain rewards.
  • Exploration: Wander through fantasy cities, towns, and landscapes and see what they have to offer.
  • Combat: Engage in battles that can be turn-based, real-time, or a mix of both.
  • Inventory & Equipment: Collect items, weapons, or gear to improve your character.

What Puts the “Cozy” in Cozy RPG?

Cozy RPGs are a softer, more relaxing take on traditional role-playing games. You’re not going to find any intense violence or super high-pressure gameplay here.

Instead, the appeal of cozy RPGs comes from the combination of classic RPG mechanics and:

  • Relaxing travel across scenic landscapes
  • Adorable pets and mounts
  • Cute character customization and sometimes home decoration options
  • Socialization facilitated by cozy activities like bonfires
  • Gameplay elements typical of popular cozy games like farming
  • Emphasis on wholesome moments

Why I Love Cozy RPGs

My inner nerd would love to drop my job and set off on a heroic adventure to distant lands or rear magical creatures all day. But alas, there aren’t many dungeons to crawl or dragons to slay in Midwest USA, so I’ll have to settle for RPGs instead. And the cozy ones are my favorite because…well, I love cozy games so much, I made a whole blog about them.       Gif via Tenor, uploaded by Silviaaa12

The words “cozy” and “RPG” don’t seem to come together often. But when they do, the result is something very special!

My favorite thing about them is the juxtaposing mix of adventure interspersed with peaceful downtime. Its fun to slay threats in one moment then be galloping across a quiet sandy beach, fishing in a sparkling river, or playing dress-up the next. Plus, I just love relaxing as I travel through visually pleasing and often vast open worlds. Visiting magical forests, bustling cities, tropical beaches and more, all while there on business to complete quests is so much fun.
